People with superpowers keep popping up, but the titular one in Black Adam may not be here to save us.

The latest addition to the DCEU, Black Adam will eventually face off with his comic book nemesis, Shazam. But first, he needs a solo movie to re-establish himself in this world, because his origins aren’t as modern as the familiar superhero.

Black Adam was enslaved during ancient times, and when he died the powers of the Egyptian gods were given to him. Out of fear he was locked away for thousands of years. When someone unearths him in the present day, Black Adam has to come to a decision about how to use his powers while acclimating to a world he doesn’t know at all.

While the DCEU hasn’t been a steady universe, everything about Black Adam ties it to the brighter aspects of the franchise. The Shazam movies have been well received, and with Jaume Collet-Serra directing this outing, it’s likely to stay one of its best corners. Collet-Serra has only been delivering crowd-pleasing hit after crowd-pleasing hit with Orphan, Unknown, and The Shallows, so there’s little reason to think he can’t pull off a superhero movie.

The film pairs him with his Jungle Cruise star Dwayne Johnson, who has long been attached to the DCEU as the titular superhero/villain. Co-starring with him is Sarah Shahi, Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, and Noah Centineo, some of whom will be introducing characters from the Justice Society of America.

Many new things are afoot here for the DCEU. Hopefully, it introduces nothing but good things.

Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and stars Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Shahi, Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, and Noah Centineo. It will be released in the US on October 21st. For international release dates, click here.
