A woman is caught between two lovers in Both Sides of the Blade, the latest from co-writer and director Claire Denis.

Sara has been with Jean for years now, building a steady if not entirely fulfilling life. That’s when her old flame and his old friend, François, shows up, and Sara finds herself dwelling on the things that could have been instead of everything she has. Yep, that means a love triangle develops, with Sara as the passionate but uneasy center.

Denis has done romances before, both overt (Let the Sunshine In) and coded (Beau Travail), with her usual focus on deep emotional meaning driving everything. Her films often aren’t plot-heavy, and Both Sides of the Blade seems to be following this convention. Sara’s inner life will be the key here, mining the possibilities both men present, which will take time to sort out.

Good think Denis is pairing with her frequent star Juliette Binoche to bring Sara to life. Binoche needs no introduction from me, and it’s hard to imagine the pair making a bad film together. Her co-stars aren’t a shabby bunch, either, with Vincent Lindon (Titane) and Grégoire Colin (Nénette et Boni) playing Jean and François, respectively.

With strong reviews from its festival run, this is one you’ll definitely want to check out.

Both Sides of the Blade is directed by Claire Denis and stars Juliette Binoche, Vincent Lindon, and Grégoire Colin. It will be released in the US on July 8th and in the UK on September 9th. For international release dates, click here.
