Bromma Blocks in Stockholm, Sweden
Bromma Blocks is actually a massive shopping center consisting of several large concrete buildings stacked side by side. The placement of the buildings seems a bit odd and the gigantic metal gates are unusual for a shopping center.
The buildings were once part of the Bromma Airport and housed airplanes from the 1930s to the late 1960s. At the time of its construction, the hangars at the airport were the largest in Northern Europe, an architectural wonder according to some. This in conjunction with Sweden’s very strict rules for the preservation of buildings, made it basically impossible to remove the hangars once they were abandoned.
However, the city found a use for the old structures with the first supermarket moving in during 1972, other stores quickly followed. The tracks outside were turned into parking lots and smaller satellite buildings were built beside the hangars.
Today, it’s hard to imagine this place once belonged to an airport. However, there are a few remnants of its aviation past that can still be seen, such as the giant moving walls with tracks beside them. There is also an old control panel that can be found in one of the shops.
