The First Amendment Museum in Augusta, Maine

First Amendment Museum.

Located next door to the State House and the Blaine House (Maine’s executive mansion) is the quaint First Amendment Museum. Inside explores the history, nuances, controversies, and current status of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

A conversational and casual guided tour of the museum is free. It takes visitors through each room of the home where various First Amendment topics are discussed. The historic home housing the museum is interesting unto itself as it presents a hodge-podge of various architectural elements. Exhibits also highlight Guy P. Gannett and his family, who constructed and resided inside the house. Gannett is known as one of the most influential figures in the history of Maine journalism.

The museum is worth the visit for those interested in politics, history, architecture, or culture. The staff is friendly, tours are free, and the museum is open year-round.
