No better time than the present for a post-apocalyptic thriller, as we people of Earth contend with the ongoing lurch into oblivion that is daily life out here in the real world. The logline of The Midnight Sky almost sounds like a joke, in its relatively close proximity to the current state of affairs, as the remaining denizens of the planet warn those on an interstellar getaway that returning may not be worth it.
That’s the long and short of the upcoming release from Netflix, previewed for the first time today in a new trailer. George Clooney’s latest directorial outing imagines a world in decidedly direr straits than our own, rocked to its core by a cataclysm left a mystery by the clip below, which is to say that things could still technically get worse for us.
Clooney also stars as one of the last human souls alive, having secluded himself in a secure research facility in Antarctica. As such, it falls to him to carry a vital message warding off a group of astronauts (including Felicity Jones) preparing to return to the home they don’t realize has been ravaged by… something.
