LOCKED DOWN Trailer

It’s the perfect time for a heist in Locked Down, the latest from director Doug Liman.

Now we’re getting the pandemic content started. Sure, we’ve has some smaller productions rush out, but this is our first big affair, one with A-list stars and glitzy locales conceived, produced, and released during the pandemic. Aren’t we living through wonderful (awful) times?

The film begins in a familiar enough way: an unhappy couple is hit by lockdown unaware, the disintegration of normality putting even more of a strain on their relationship. Instead of moping in their own stew, though, they decide to pull off a jewelry heist at Harrods, and maybe, just maybe, fix their relationship.

Yeah, it’s ridiculous glitz, but it’s also familiar territory for Liman. They aren’t plucking his credit on Mr. & Mrs. Smith for this trailer out of nowhere, clearly hoping to sell this a genre-heavy romance in much the same vein. They could’ve gone with any number of other films he’s made (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity), so the choice seems telling.

Also like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, he’s got a proven leading duo in Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor along with a bevy of supporting players who apparently had nothing else to do during the pandemic.

This won’t be an escape from our times, but at least it will add some good ol’ movie glamour to things.

Locked Down is directed by Doug Liman and stars Anne Hathaway, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Ben Kingsley. It will be released in the US on HBO Max on January 14th, 2021, and in the theaters in the UK on March 5th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
