For us here at LWLies HQ, one of the most hotly anticipated titles on the highly tentative calendar for 2021 is The Souvenir Part II, Joanna Hogg’s follow-up to her loosely autobiographical memoir of artistry and passion in her youth. But while Hogg’s fanbase (we prefer to be called Wild Hoggs) awaits the release of her next feature, we can already start to get excited about her next next feature.
The latest issue of UK Vogue includes a lengthy chat between playwright Jeremy O Harris and Tilda Swinton, in which the movie star and regular Hogg player reveals that another collaboration between the two is already in the can. After appearing in the first installment of the Souvenir and its upcoming sequel, Swinton will also star in a film discovered to be titled The Eternal Daughter.
Swinton doesn’t give up too much in the way of details during the interview, but the shoe-leather sleuths over at The Film Stage did some digging and found that Swinton will star alongside theatre vet Joseph Mydell and relative unknown Carly-Sophia Davies. Production has reportedly wrapped following a shoot in Wales, meaning that Hogg could have a pair of festival contenders on her hands film festivals become an existent phenomenon again.
In related Tilda Swinton news, she’ll also lead the next directorial project from master cinematographer Christopher Doyle, a sci-fi picture (more sci than fi) called Immunodeficiency. Swinton will portray a “bee professor” who travels to Australia only to be kidnapped by an “obsessive young woman,” a comment from Doyle on the urgent danger of colony collapse and looming mass bee extinction.
Swinton has the in-demand career so many actors dream of, when you’re regularly called on by the world’s top auteurs around the globe to carry their high-profile art films. (She’s got the lead in Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s English-language debut Memoria, also coming down the pike.) Her fruitful symbiosis with Hogg is just one of many long-term partnerships – with the Coens, with Bong Joon-ho, with any director looking for the ethereal presence only Swinton can provide.
