Get a Taste of the Upcoming Gastro Obscura Book

After a year spent eating many of the same meals, made in the same kitchen, in the same house, I think many of us are yearning to get out, travel, and taste a larger slice of the world. Around the globe, people have sacrificed to keep each other safe during the pandemic: We gave up large family dinners, trips to regions with fantastic food, and visits to our local watering holes. Now, thanks to public-health measures and vaccination campaigns, we can look forward with anticipation to a future of traveling and eating cheek to jowl once more.

That’s why I am so excited to share a sneak peek of a project that me, my coauthor Cecily Wong, and the Gastro Obscura team have been working on for four years. It’s a book, and it will hit the shelves in fall 2021. It’s called Gastro Obscura: A Food Adventurer’s Guide.

The idea behind this guide, based on Gastro Obscura’s articles, recipes, and more, is to expand our understanding and appreciation of what people around the world eat and drink, from Montana to Madagascar. Covering all seven continents, Gastro Obscura explores culinary curiosities that range from a beer made from fog in Chile to Sardinia’s “Threads of God” pasta to Egypt’s 2,000-year-old egg ovens.

Every page includes information for travelers looking to try unique, local foods and visit unusual eateries, whether in a city center or atop a mountain after a breath-taking hike. It also documents food history (the network of ancient Roman fish-sauce factories), culture (four million women gathering to make rice pudding), and festivals (feeding wild macaques a pyramid of fruit at Thailand’s Monkey Buffet Festival). We hope the book will inspire readers to see what we eat and drink as an endless source of curiosity.

We will be launching a bigger pre-order campaign this summer (with an exciting pre-order giveaway), but if you want to be the first to get your hands on the book, you can pre-order now by using any of the below links. Pre-ordering now helps the book and Gastro Obscura, and you will still be able to get the special pre-order perk this summer!

We can’t wait to share this book with you. Here’s everywhere you can pre-order it:
